Vera Casaca wins AVANCA PITCH SESSIONS with a feature film project.
The Short Film Award goes to Cuban director Yasser Socarrás.
The “Avanca Pitch Sessions 2020” ended and the international jury decided to award the filmmaker Vera Casaca the Feature Film Award and the Cuban director Yasser Socarrás for the short film projects.
“Cimento e Betão” is the title of the new project that Vera Casaca is seeking to carry out. Graduated in clinical analysis from the University of Algarve, master’s degree in nuclear medicine at Cranfield University, PhD at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, later went on to study cinema in New York at NYFA and at the School of Visual Arts. She made “Ao Telephone com Deus” (2017) and “Se Poirot Estivesse Aqui” (2019), short films that mark her clear preference for black and eccentric comedies.
In the feature projects category, the jury also awarded Honorable Mentions to “Terra Vil” by Luis Campos (Portugal) and “Come Petito, Come Molière!” by Giuseppe Iacono (Italy)
In the short film projects the winner was “Corolario” by Yasser Socarrás, a Cuban director currently living in Brazil. Having studied at the Superior Institute of Art (Cuba) and having a Master in Social Anthropology in Brazil, Socarrás directed the feature film “Final de día” (Cuba, 2010) and the short films “More coffee and…” (Cuba, 2012) , “Bolo” (Brasil, 2017) and wrote the script for “La mano de DI0S” (Bolivia, 2015).
Among the short film projects, “Pelo na Venta” by Margarida Madeira and “Kamikaze” by Rodrigo Tavares (Brazil), were also distinguished with Honorable Mentions.
The Jury, led by Nuno Gonçalves (COE of the distributor “Cinemundo”), was constituted by producers Maria Pacheco (Portugal), Alfonso Palazón (Spain), Simone G. Saibene (Italy / Spain) and Ralf Cabral Tambke (Brazil).
The Avanca Pitch Sessions is a new initiative of the 24th edition of the AVANCA 2020 Film Festival, which aims to present the best ideas for short and feature films under development to the audiovisual industry, in an environment of collaboration and promotion of cinema and authors.
The authors of the 15 nominated projects previously participated in a workshop on film pitch and exclusive mentoring sessions with journalist and film critic Rui Pedro Tendinha and during the AVANCA 2020 Film Festival, they presented their projects in sessions coordinated by André Leite Coelho and José Miguel Pinto.
Avanca Pitch Sessions, seeking to respond to the pandemic context, took place online.
AVANCA is an organization of the Avanca Cine Club and the Municipality of Estarreja and has been taking place each year with the support of the ICA / Ministry of Culture, IPDJ, CIRA, the Parish Council of Avanca, the Estarreja School Group, the Egas Moniz School, the Parish and the Avanca Associations, with the support of several universities and higher education schools in the country, companies and other institutions in the region.
